EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT: GET TO KNOW THE TEAM
RAVEN OUELLETTE
JUNIOR BIOLOGIST
Meet Raven Ouellette, Junior Biologist, a 2022 addition to our Blue Heron Environmental team. Raven joined Blue Heron Environmental in February of 2022. Ms. Ouellette has six years of experience in biological sciences and research. Raven’s experience focuses on primarily the small mammal and ornithological field, including bird and small mammal identification, and their respective life histories.
Ms. Ouellette holds a bachelor’s degree with honors in Biological Sciences where she researched birdsong, and a master’s degree in Biological Sciences, where she studied the impacts of urban development on eastern chipmunks. Raven will be based out of our NEW Sudbury Blue Heron Office located at 274 Douglas Street.
We asked Raven Ouellette to answer a few questions to help our clients get to know her better.

GET TO KNOW IAIN AVIS
I heard about Blue Heron Environmental from a friend that worked with Jenn at Blue Heron. I reached out to her to see if they had any openings and explained my birding/small mammal experience, and it turns out they needed a birder!
My favorite part about being a junior biologist is getting to complete fieldwork since I enjoy nature and I am always curious about what goes on outdoors.
I also enjoy talking to people about wildlife and science, so the job is a perfect fit for me.
I think a common misconception about jobs in the biological sciences field (or really any environmental-related field) is that you are working outdoors all the time, which is not the case. I think the career involves working in a variety of environments, including a lab to conduct experiments, or in an office to research and write reports or proposals.
You also do a lot of travelling for trainings, fieldwork, or meetings, which is fun too.
I got my first job when I was 16 working as a lifeguard for three years, then moving into a pool coordinator position for another five years. I enjoyed it – one of my favorite hobbies is swimming, so at the time it made sense to become a lifeguard while completing my undergraduate degree!
I have played guitar all my life and really enjoy fingerpicking, so I purchased a banjo to learn something new. I wish I had more time (and patience) to become a skilled banjo player, so if I could learn it instantly, that would be nice.
“Happiness is a warm puppy.”
I have never been east of Ontario, so I would like to either a) visit anywhere in north-eastern Ontario that I have never been before, or b) visit anywhere towards the east side of Canada.
As of right now, Lake Superior Provincial Park. I was passing through and stopped several times along the way to enjoy the view.
