EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT: GET TO KNOW THE TEAM
JONATHAN CHESTER
ENVIRONMENTAL PROJECT MANAGER
Meet Jonathan Chester, Environmental Project Manager, a 2022 addition to our Blue Heron Environmental team.
Jonathan’s environmental journey began after graduating from Confederation College’s Environmental Technician program. He started in the drinking water and wastewater sector but quickly found his true passion in mining. With over six years of experience, Jonathan recently served as the Environmental Coordinator for a gold mine near White River, Ontario. His focus is on managing compliance, implementing field monitoring programs, obtaining permits, and managing data.
We asked Jonathan Chester to answer a few questions to help our clients get to know him better.

I first heard about Blue Heron while working in the environment department at the gold mine. We collaborated on several projects, including revising our Closure Plan, getting guidance on indigenous consultation, and updating our Spill Prevention and Contingency Plan.
My favourite part about being an Environmental Project Manager is the ability to have a positive impact on the environment. I love working on projects that have a direct and meaningful effect on preserving and protecting our natural resources.
One myth about being an Environmental Project Manager is that it’s all about paperwork and regulations. Sure, that’s part of it, but it’s not the whole story. We’re also out in the field, ensuring everything runs smoothly and making decisions that balance environmental protection with project goals.
My first job was working at a small printing shop in Markham.
If I could pick any new skill instantly, I’d choose to speak a second language fluently. It would be a game-changer for sure! Being able to speak multiple languages opens up so many doors, makes traveling more fun, and gives me a competitive edge in the job market.
“Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful.”
– Albert Schweitzer
I’m looking forward to planning a warm weather getaway with my family this winter. It’s been a while since we’ve all been able to take a proper vacation, and now that our son is a bit older, travelling as a family will be way more fun.
In 2013, my then-partner (now wife) and I went on the adventure of a lifetime! We spent three months exploring Thailand and Laos. It was a blast! The people were wonderful, and the food was out of this world.
If you have the chance, check out the Gibbon Experience in Huay Xai, Laos. It’s an absolute must-do if you are in the region!
