Josie-Ann Tessier

Biologist – Project Manager

Meet Josie-Ann Tessier, Biologist-Project Manager, a 2021 addition to our Blue Heron Environmental team.

Josie-Ann is a terrestrial biologist with 9 years of experience in the field of biology.  Her focus is on species at risk, desktop screenings for species at risk and natural heritage features, and environmental assessments. She is a certified Environmental Professional specializing in Fisheries and Wildlife, and Site Assessment and Reclamation.

Mrs. Tessier also has over 6 years of consulting experience. Her consulting experience includes project management, natural environment studies, environmental impact studies, baseline studies, impact assessments and mitigation. She has been involved with several large-scale projects through which she has gained a thorough understanding of environmental legislature.

The projects for which she was involved have focused on permitting requirements for the development of mining, aggregate, and construction projects.

We asked Josie-Ann Tessier to answer a few questions to help our clients get to know her better.

We continue to share the stories of the remarkable additions to our hard-working team at Blue Heron Environmental (BHE). In the past few  years, we’ve hired a number of new professionals to help reach new heights for our business.

To showcase the people who make up Blue Heron, we sat down with team members to ask them a few questions about their professional career — and a few personal ones too.

HOW DID YOU FIRST LEARN ABOUT BLUE HERON ENVIRONMENTAL?

I was looking for a different work environment and a few current staff members informed me about the wonderful opportunity that Blue Heron could offer me. Without hesitation, I jumped on board.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART ABOUT BEING A BIOLOGIST - PROJECT MANAGER?

As a Cree/Inue, I have a sacred duty to protect the lands, wildlife and water for the next seven generation to come. Being a Biologist – Project Manager, enables me to make sure I fulfil this duty as much as possible.

The project manager aspect helps me foster new relationships with all kinds of interesting people. Having an outside component and office component to the job also makes me very happy.

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB?

My first job was working as a baker/cake decorator for a local cakery in Sault Ste. Maire. I would prepare special ordered cakes, and assist in decorating wedding cakes. I also made bread, cookies, doughnuts, macaroons, mini cakes, and other varieties of desserts.

We often provided catering service for weddings, baby showers and birthdays. Being a baker was my dream goal, but soon realized the only way I could make a living would be if I moved to a bigger city where the client base is bigger. Realizing that and being an outdoors woman, I changed my profession goals to something else I loved doing; wildlife and forestry.

IF YOU COULD PICK UP ANY NEW SKILL IN AN INSTANT, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

Taxidermy – People who know me, understand my fascination in preserving wildlife and my curiosity on how animal anatomy differs from one species to another.
