Meet Dana Stephenson, Environmental GIS Technician, a 2022 addition to our Blue Heron Environmental team.
Dana Stephenson is an environmental GIS technician with 5 years of experience in the field of environmental science. Her focus is on Geographic Information Systems (GIS) including data management, analysis, interpretation, and visualization.
Ms. Stephenson also has extensive field experience from working as a research assistant in Norway and working at an atmospheric chemistry lab in Alert, Nunavut. She also has experience with ground penetrating radar surveys (GPR) as her master’s thesis project investigated the effects of climate change on a glacier using GPR.
We asked Dana Stephenson to answer a few questions to help our clients get to know her better.

I was lucky enough to learn about Blue Heron Environmental through LinkedIn!
My favorite part of working as an environmental GIS technician is using spatial data to solve unique problems.
One misconception about GIS is that all data is created equal when that is not the case. The phrase “garbage in, garbage out” really applies when doing spatial analysis and rendering useful figures, if your data is of poor quality the end product will also suffer, unfortunately.
A part of my job is making sure the data we use is the best data available for the task at hand.
My first job was working at a restaurant near my family cottage on Parry Sound’s south channel.
Instantly knowing another language would be neat as I never seem to find the time to study it!
Of all the paths you take in life, make sure a few of them are dirt.

I have never been to Newfoundland, and I hope to find myself there sometime soon!
Kluane National Park is a real treasure in the summer!
