JOB DESCRIPTION
Blue Heron is seeking an Intermediate Fisheries/Aquatic Biologist to oversee the development and implementation of aquatic studies, aquatic offsetting programs, environmental effect studies, and baseline data collection programs, primarily at mining projects and operations across Ontario to support permitting activities.
The successful candidate would report to the Biophysical Division Lead.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Leading the design and implementation of fish and aquatic studies/field work and provide technical oversight;
- Liaising with internal staff and external clients, stakeholders and regulators;
- Analyzing data, preparing deliverables;
- Managing task budgets and schedules;
- Assisting with proposal preparation;
- Managing project budgets; and
- Mentoring junior staff.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
- Minimum of 3 to 5 years of previous consulting experience;
- Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Fish Biology or equivalent;
- Minimum of 3 to 5 years of multidisciplinary experience in aquatic ecology/freshwater fisheries biology;
- Understanding of northern Ontario fisheries and fish habitat restoration and enhancement techniques;
- Thorough understanding and application of fish habitat assessment and quantification methods;
- Knowledge of the Provincial and Federal regulatory processes, guidelines and best management practices, including the Metal and Diamond Mining Effluent Regulations – the Environmental Effects Monitoring component;
- Understanding of instream/environmental flow assessment and modeling tools;
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including field work under a variety of conditions;
- Willingness to travel and work outdoors in remote locations;
- Strong computer, verbal and written communication skills;
- Advanced statistical experience, including multivariate statistics and the use of statistical software packages;
- Excellent organization, prioritization and time management skills;
- Proven ability to work within project budgets, under contracts, and with sub-consultants;
- Demonstrated technical writing and data analysis skills;
- Possession of a current and valid Driver’s License; and
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, Backpack Electrofishing Certification and Pleasure Craft Operators Card.
