Employee Spotlight: Get to Know the Team

Andrew Szydziak

Senior Project Manager

Meet Andrew Szydziak, Senior Project Manager, a 2025 addition to our Blue Heron Environmental team.

Andrew is a Senior Project Manager in Sudbury Ontario, with over 18 years of valuable experience working in the environmental field. As a Senior Environmental Specialist, Andrew has been involved in environmental projects across various sectors, including mining, heavy industrial, municipal, residential and commercial. Andrew has extensive knowledge of environmental regulations and compliance requirements for all aspects of the mining life cycle, from advanced exploration to closure.

We asked Andrew Szydziak to answer a few questions to help our clients get to know him better.

We continue to share the stories of the remarkable additions to our hard-working team at Blue Heron Environmental (BHE). In the past couple of years, we’ve hired a number of new professionals to help reach new heights for our business.

To introduce these new Blue Heron members, we thought we’d sit down and ask them a few questions about their professional career (and a few personal ones too).

Join us in welcoming Andrew to the team!

HOW DID YOU FIRST LEARN ABOUT BLUE HERON ENVIRONMENTAL?

Throughout my years as a consultant, I have had the opportunity to work with Blue Heron Environmental on several projects, in which we shared resources for certain disciplines of the projects. This continued throughout my career until our paths met a little bit closer and I had the opportunity to join the Blue Heron team.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART ABOUT BEING A Senior Project Manager?

The opportunity to work with Clients on their projects and bring teams together to meet the project objectives.

WHAT IS one myth ABOUT BEING A Senior Project Manager that you'd like to clear up?

Not so much being a senior project manager, but working in the environmental field as a whole. People assume that because you work in the environmental field you are a tree hugger. This is far from the truth.

Although the care and the protection of the environment plays a huge part in what we do, we also provide guidance and support to our clients to ensure they are operating in an environmentally responsible way and within their permits / regulations, but still achieving their operational goals.

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB?

My first real job was working at Chapters bookstore as a customer service representative. Although I was not (and still am not) a big reader, I loved helping people find books and interacting with the customers.

IF YOU COULD PICK UP ANY NEW SKILL IN AN INSTANT, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

Flexibility. I am the most rigid person on planet Earth. Some days I think maybe I am made of concrete and not skin and bones.

GOT ANY FAVORITE QUOTES?

“Gotta shoot your shot” – You sometimes need to take risks in your life / career to continue to move forward. You will never know unless you try.

WHAT’S SOMETHING YOU WANT TO DO IN THE NEXT YEAR THAT YOU’VE NEVER DONE BEFORE?

I would love to go Heli/Cat snowboarding out west. Although I have done a lot of snowboarding across Canada, the thought of getting into the mountains onto some untouched terrain has always been on my bucket list.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE PLACE YOU’VE EVER VISITED?

Hawaii is by far my favorite place that I have visited so far.

The people, the culture, the food and the easy going lifestyle was a selling point for me and I would love to make this a place where I visit more often.
