Kieran Rivest
Environmental Technician
Meet Kieran Rivest, Environmental Technician, a 2026 addition to our Blue Heron Environmental team.
Kieran is a Timmins local and a recent graduate of Canadore College’s Environmental Technician program. Her training has provided a strong foundation in environmental monitoring, field sampling, laboratory practices, and environmental data collection.
Through her program, Kieran gained hands-on experience with water and soil sampling, plant, tree, animal, and insect identification, limnology techniques, water and ice safety, and environmental sampling protocols.
As part of Blue Heron’s Compliance and Technical Services department, Kieran supports field and compliance projects through monitoring, sampling support, documentation, and project assistance.
Kieran's local Northern Ontario background, interest in outdoor work, and attention to safety provide a strong foundation as she continues to build her career in environmental consulting.

HOW DID YOU FIRST LEARN ABOUT BLUE HERON ENVIRONMENTAL?
I first found out about Blue Heron Environmental through a family friend when I told her I was going to be going to school for environmental science. Once I learnt about what the field technicians do for our clients and for our community, I knew I wanted to be a part of the team.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART ABOUT BEING AN ENVIRONMENTAL TECHNICIAN?
My favorite part about being an environmental technician is being able to spend my days outside and the feeling that I'm helping the environment that I hold very near and dear to my heart.
WHAT IS ONE MYTH ABOUT BEING AN ENVIRONMENTAL TECHNICIAN THAT YOU'D LIKE TO CLEAR UP?
One myth I would like to clear up about being an environmental technician is that our job is not very strenuous, we work hard to do what we do best!
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB?
My first job was at Timmins Nissan as a student receptionist, I answered phones, did paperwork and spoke with clients to give them the best service possible.
IF YOU COULD PICK UP ANY NEW SKILL IN AN INSTANT, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
If I could pick up any new skill in an instant, it would probably be to identify and count birds by just their call.
One of my professors in college was able to tell you the species and how many there were by just their sound, I would love to have that skill!

WHAT’S SOMETHING YOU WANT TO DO IN THE NEXT YEAR THAT YOU’VE NEVER DONE BEFORE?
I would love to do more biological studies, one of my goals is to have more encounters with wildlife and to learn more about their patterns and behaviors.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE PLACE YOU’VE EVER VISITED?
My favorite place I have ever visited is Banff, Alberta. The first time I saw the mountains was one of the most incredible experiences I have ever had.
Seeing a grizzly for the first time and taking in the vast landscape is something I will never forget.
