Water Regulatory Requirements

Water Regulatory Requirements

Students will learn the legislation and regulatory requirements related to both surface and ground water, and how each are applied to industry-related activities in Ontario.

Groundwater Monitoring Techniques

Groundwater Monitoring Techniques

Students will review techniques and best practices for groundwater sampling, including safety considerations/preparations, equipment, QA/QC, sample handling, chain of custody, storage, analysis and management of data.

Surface Water Monitoring Techniques

Surface Water Monitoring Techniques

Includes a review of techniques and best practices for surface water sampling, including safety considerations/preparations, equipment, QA/QC, sample handling, chain of custody, storage, analysis and management of data.

Streamflow Measuring Techniques

Streamflow Measuring Techniques

This session will review techniques and best practices for streamflow measurements, including safety considerations/preparations, equipment, and streamflow calculations.

Soil Monitoring Techniques

Soil Monitoring Techniques

Instructors will cover the regulatory requirements and protocols for soil monitoring, as well as the tools and equipment necessary to complete these duties. Includes a demonstration of soil monitoring techniques.

Winter Fieldwork Safety

Winter Fieldwork Safety

In Canada, working outdoors during the winter requires a considerable amount of preparation. The northern Ontario climate presents challenges that call for added attention to safety when considering warmth, remoteness, and hydration.

During this session, students will learn best safety practices for winter fieldwork as well as tips and tools to use when preparing for your next outing, while also following industrial site requirements.

Best Practices for Field Notes & Photos

Best Practices for Field Notes & Photos

Taking proper field notes and site photos is critical for documenting the conditions of a site at a particular moment in time. Discover the importance of applying these best practices while conducting environmental monitoring activities or inspections.

Navigation & GPS Training

Navigation & GPS Training

Navigating in the field is a skill that every environmental person should have. Not only is it important from a safety standpoint, but improves your ability to mark groundwater wells, effluent discharge points, and water quality monitoring locations

Marking waypoints also provides the option to map these locations and communicate them electronically, for example on Google Maps. The Navigation course provides the learner with the tools to navigate in the field with the aid of a GPS device and to mark points that can be traceable. A demonstration of mapping waypoints will also be shown.

Field Preparation & Safety

Field Preparation & Safety

Participants will receive an introduction to best practices in preparing for field sampling, including preparation of field sample kits, sampling handling and shipment, and QA/QC programs.

Air and Noise Monitoring Techniques

Air and Noise Monitoring Techniques

Industrial sites have a legal requirement to monitor air quality and noise generation for any potential impacts to people and the natural environment.

During this course, students will review the techniques for monitoring Air and Noise at industrial sites, and the requirements for reporting results.

Conducting Environmental Site Inspections

Conducting Environmental Site Inspections

Discover the various types of environmental inspections typically conducted by internal personnel at industrial sites, including inspections of waste, chemical, and fuel storage areas.

Learn why particular inspections are required (i.e. regulatory vs. site-driven requirement), when to perform inspections, and how to record and manage inspection results.

Compliance with Environmental Permits

Compliance with Environmental Permits

This session will identify the triggers for environmental permits in Ontario and provides an overview of the application process for various permit types so that managers understand resource and timing requirements for typical permits.
