Regulatory Update: Canada’s New Clean Electricity Regulations (CER) in Effect
As of January 1, 2025, the Clean Electricity Regulations (CER) are now in force, aiming to drive Canada’s transition to a net-zero electricity grid by 2050.
Key points you need to know:
-
- Registration Deadline: Facilities with affected units (e.g., cogeneration systems, steam turbines, and generators) must register by December 31, 2025.
- Emission Caps & Compliance: Limits will be set on CO2 pollution from almost all electricity generation units that use fossil fuels, beginning 2035.
- Phased Implementation: The regulations will be gradually phased in, with different timelines for various sectors.
If your facility operates units impacted by these changes, it’s essential to assess and take action to stay compliant.
Laura Wareham, one of our regulatory experts, is here to guide you through these changes, ensuring you understand your obligations and stay on track with CER compliance.
