Regulatory Enforcement and Environmental Management Systems | Session 5

INCREASE YOUR UNDERSTANDING OF THE ROLE OF ENVIRONMENTAL PROFESSIONALS, WITHIN THE FRAMEWORK OF A MODERN-DAY MINING OPERATION.

​This program provides a detailed analysis and discussion of the latest environmental regulations and compliance guidelines within Ontario.

 

Among the topics covered are a discussion of the federal and provincial legislative frameworks and their application to the resource industry, environmental permit requirements and the permitting process, the role of Aboriginal consultation on the permitting process, and an introduction to environmental management and compliance programs.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

This workshop is designed for professionals that have a basic understanding of legislative requirements in Ontario, but that wish to delve further into industry requirements.

This course is perfect for those Ontario professionals that:

  • Are responsible for environmental compliance on their site;
  • Are tasked with auditing compliance or conducting environmental inspections;
  • Are responsible for a specific environmental function (e.g. waste or are a member of a HSE team)

EVENT LIST & SCHEDULE

ENVIRONMENTAL REGULATIONS AND PERMITTING

Participants will be presented with an overview of environmental legislative framework  in Ontario, with a focus on mining operations.

We will also present review triggers for permitting requirements that are typically encountered for mining activity.

WATER TAKING AND DISCHARGE, AIR EMISSIONS, NPRI AND GHGs

This session is a deeper dive into the regulatory requirements for specific environmental issues at Mine sites:   Requirements for taking water, waste water management, air emissions management, including monitoring and reporting requirements.

FRIDAY
JUNE 16th

WASTE, FUELS & ENVIRONMENTAL EMERGENCIES

Common to most industrial sites, managing wastes, fuels and chemicals as well as preparing for and responding to environmental emergencies such as spills or exceedances are a large part of an environmental practitioner’s role. 

This session will look into the regulatory requirements as they pertain to mine sites in Ontario.

INDIGENOUS CONSULTATION, WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT & CLOSURE PLANS

This session starts with an examination of Indigenous Consultation rules and best practices as they relate to mining operations, followed by a discussion on common Wildlife Management practices on mine properties.  The afternoon session is an introduction to Closure Plans for mines in Ontario.   

Learn the various triggers for Closure Plan and Closure Plan Amendment Submissions, as well as recent practices and evolving trends regarding the practices and information requirements for filing of Mine Closure Plans/Closure Plan Amendments.

REGULATORY ENFORCEMENT & ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS

The Regulatory Enforcement session provides a review of the consequences for proponents in the Mining industry who do not adhere to  the environmental laws that apply to their work sites. 

In the afternoon, we introduce participants to the concept of systems for the management of environmental compliance requirements, with a focus on risk management and prioritization, as well as practical, simple and cost-effective management programs.

SERENA MAKI - TRAINING COORDINATOR

Serena Maki has over 10 years of managing environmental compliance systems at a number of mining operations in Ontario. She additionally has 10 years in environmental toxicity laboratory experience. Ms. Maki graduated from Canadore College from the Environmental Biology Technology program, completing an internship with the Ministry of Environment and Energy’s Toxicity Laboratory.

Ms. Maki has an extensive background in managing environmental compliance at mining operations, and has been responsible for establishing and managing the environmental budget at mine sites.

LINDA BYRON - DIRECTOR

Linda Byron is a professional Environmental Scientist who has been working in the environmental field since 1990. Ms. Byron has an honours Bachelor of Science degree from Laurentian University, and has extensive operational expertise in the practical, real-life environmental issues encountered in the mining industry.

Ms. Byron has been instrumental in the implementation of Certified Environmental Management Systems at large base-metal mining companies in Northern Ontario, Canada, and has assisted other resource-based industries in practical aspects of implementing and maintaining an effective EMS. She has also assisted industries with permitting efforts as well as development and implementation of compliance and training programs for mining operations in Canada and abroad.

Brad Cole, Training and Indigenous Consultation Supervisor

BRAD COLE - TRAINING AND INDIGENOUS CONSULTATION SUPERVISOR

Brad Cole has over a decade of experience in the coordination of environmental management activities in the mining and forestry industries, complemented by a deep understanding of the Canadian Environmental acts and regulations. Brad also brings a strong capacity for visioning the long-term impacts of projects, complemented by the ability to chart pragmatic strategies for mitigating risks.

Mr. Cole’s experience encompasses conducting environmental site assessments and developing environmental management systems, as well as experience in facilitating consultations with First Nations communities and the public at large.
