While reviewing the Federal Fisheries Act, we will review what types of industrial activities that can trigger the Act, how to remain in compliance, and looking into the future with the 2019 amendments.

Our first Webinar is an overview of the Federal Fisheries Act, where we review what types of industrial activities that can trigger the Act, how to remain in compliance, and looking into the future with the 2019 amendments.
Our second webinar, Aquatic Surveys provides a summary of what aquatic studies are, why they are required, timing of studies, and the various types of studies that exist.
Benthic Surveys-in the Field will be a full day, consisting of theoretical background on benthic macroinvertebrate surveys, followed by hands-on practice with sampling methods as per industry standards such as OBBN and OSAP.
After sampling, participants will then process the samples and using Dichotomous Keys, identify specimens collected.
Vegetation Surveys-in the Field will also be a full day, consisting of reviewing the tools to identify plants and ecosites common throughout Northeastern Ontario as well as an overview of the Ecological Land Classification (ELC) system.
In the field, participants will be introduced to plant anatomy using plants in the Timmins area and classify an ecosite using the ELC system.
The Electrofishing Assistant Workshop will prepare participants to take part in backpack electrofishing field surveys as a netter or assistant. The course will cover the theory and safety of using a backpack electrofishing unit, and an overview of fish identification.
In the field, participants will practice in-water communication, netting skills, and will have a chance for hands-on fish identification with live specimens.
Kara Gauvreau is an Aquatic Biologist with 10 years of experience in environmental science and research. Kara’s focus is on fisheries management, fish and benthic identification, and data management.
Ms. Gauvreau has served as the field project technical lead for several large-scale fisheries assessments, and also has experience conducting wildlife surveys in the field, including invasive species surveys and habitat characterization.
Jennifer Braun is a terrestrial biologist with 15 years of consulting experience. Her focus is on plant community classification, plant identification and species at risk. She has served as the vegetation and wetlands component lead for several large-scale environmental assessments.
Ms. Braun also has over 14 years of experience leading wildlife surveys in the field, including species at risk surveys and habitat characterization.
